A motorist left in a critical condition after rolling his car after it hit black ice on the Kilmog on Thursday was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after suffering a spinal cord injury, police say.
At 8.20am on Thursday, a vehicle being driven on State Highway 1 between Pryde and Porteous Rds on the Kilmog slid on black ice and tumbled 40m down a bank near Evansdale.
The vehicle rolled multiple times and the driver was trapped until emergency services were able to winch him out using a helicopter.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the 69-year-old man was in a critical condition when airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
After his arrival, he was airlifted to Christchurch for treatment of a spinal cord injury.
There were a further eight crashes on Thursday due to the weather.
None involved any injuries, Snr Sgt Bond said.
