DCC to cull or move geese

The Dunedin City Council has begun a "pre-feeding'' programme with the feral geese at Watson Park, Port Chalmers, in preparation for either moving or culling them.

DCC parks operations manager Hamish Black said the council's geese control contractor had sought veterinary advice about sedative options for relocation - with the other option being culling.

"We are pre-feeding the geese [with grain] and, depending on how well that goes, we will get more advice on whether we relocate or cull them,'' Mr Black said.

Either way, the plan was to remove the geese by next weekend, he said.

If the geese were relocated, it would be to an area where there were already established populations of geese, with Lake Waihola one such possibility, Mr Black said.
