Dunedin residents urged to lock houses

Police are warning Dunedin residents to lock their houses for their own safety after several incidents at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said a house in Mulford St, Concord, which had a bathroom window open, was entered and keys inside were stolen.

Alcohol in the house was also stolen.

The keys were used to steal a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander stationwagon parked in the driveway.

Food was stolen from a flat Howe St, North Dunedin between 11.30pm Saturday and 1.30am yesterday.

A flatmate sleeping upstairs heard somebody cooking food.

"They thought it was their flatmates."

The door to the flat was unlocked.

The residents found rice burnt onto a plate after it was cooked in a microwave.

A toaster was stolen from a house in Anzac Ave in Central Dunedin between 11.30pm and midnight on Saturday.

The front door of the house was unlocked.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said people needed to lock their homes to ensure their own personal safety.

"Especially the students, because they have people coming and going and they tend to leave their doors unlocked but they really need to be more careful."
