The last time Kelly Johnson — aka "Blondini" — visited a nondescript Dunedin garage he had the cops hot on his tail.

This time he was taking things a bit more leisurely.

Yesterday, on a tour of the South Island, Mr Johnson revisited the location from the New Zealand road trip film Goodbye Pork Pie more than 40 years later.

Mr Johnson was travelling with his wife, sister-in-law and brother-in-law and rediscovering the garage came as a surprise.

"It turns out that my sister-in-law used to live in the flat which is attached next door to the shed that was used in the movie."

The group were visiting his sister-in-law’s old flat when he thought the garage next door looked familiar.

"I was like, ‘wasn’t that the place we used in the movie?’; and surely enough it was."

He said it had not changed a lot since they filmed there years ago.

"Seeing something in your memory and then seeing it in real time is pretty neat .

"It’s so beautiful, a lot of architecture in Dunedin. It made me realise how little I know about Dunedin and how cool it really is."

Mr Johnson said he had only been back to the city once but was not able to have a look around and was keen to do so on the trip.

"This time I’m not being chased by the police or anything like I was in the film."

He visited Port Chalmers and thought it was a beautiful little town.

He would be going on a tiki tour around Stewart Island for three days before returning home.

Mr Johnson was a disputes tribunal referee after 35 years of practising law.

He said he had been in a few New Zealand movies after Goodbye Pork Pie including Utu and performed in some stage plays.

However, he got a "real job" as a lawyer when he had children.
