Just four year's ago Canterbury's newest hooker was playing second-five for St Andrew's College's under-16 side.

Thursday's Mitre 10 Cup match at Orangetheory Stadium is likely to be one to remember for former St Andrew’s College captain Shilo Klein.

The 20-year-old hooker, who was part of High School Old Boys’ premier title-winning side this year, looks set to make his Canterbury debut from the bench against Manawatu.

Surprisingly, just four years ago Klein was playing at second-five for the St Andrew’s under-16 side. However, he was convinced to make the move to hooker and the decision appears to be reaping rewards.

“He had a great work ethic and passion to do well – it’s no surprise he’s got this far,” said his former coach at St Andrew’s Mike Johnston.

Senior Canterbury lock Luke Romano has only seen Klein play for a limited amount of time, but backs the hooker’s passion and ability.

“He certainly gives it his all. He’s someone I try to stay clear of on the training field because he’s certainly into it at 100 percent
. . . that’s the type of character he is and now he’s been given his chance,” said Romano.

Klein, who was born in Sacramento, California, before moving to New Zealand with his parents at the age of three, takes his place in the team from Brodie McAlister who is being rested.

Meanwhile, utility back Braydon Ennor will miss the match with a sprained knee. Outside back Sam Gilbert and loose forward Luke Whitelock are also unavailable this week after sustaining head knocks.

•The match kicks off at 7.35pm.
