All Blacks and Crusaders skipper Scott Barrett has led the Crusaders since 2020, but coach Rob Penney said a new captain would be named for 2025.
Penney said at the time it would be "too challenging" for Barrett to continue in both captaincy roles, the New Zealand Herald reported.
There had been speculation a co-captaincy arrangement could be made for the first time - but the Herald reported it understands that won’t be the case.
Havili is understood to hold mana within the Crusaders franchise, he Herald reported.
He has played 69 games for Tasman, 128 for the Crusaders and 30 tests for the All Blacks.
He captained Tasman to consecutive NPC titles in 2019 and 2020 and has previously been Crusaders' vice-captain.
The Crusaders have had seven previous skippers - Richard Loe (1996), Todd Blackadder (1997-2001), Reuben Thorne (2002-2004), Richie McCaw (2005-2012), Kieran Read (2013-2016), Sam Whitelock (2017-2019) and Barrett (2020-2024).
Hooker Codie Taylor also led the side for much of 2020 following an injury to Barrett, the Herald reported.
