There was a minor upset in the local ties during round 1 of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup, with extra time required to find the winners of two games within the Mainland region.

Ferrymead Bays, currently in sixth on the New World Men's Premiership table, came from behind against fifth-placed Nomads to win 3 - 1. Extra time was needed to separate Burwood and Western, with Burwood advancing 1-0, while Blenheim Rangers overcame FC Nelson 2-1.

In other games, Cashmere Technical were too strong for Parklands, winning 8-1, Christchurch United defeated FC Twenty 11, Coastal Spirit overcame Waimak 3-0, with Selwyn edging Halswell 3-2. The seven winners will go into the round 2 draw, and Nelson Suburbs who had drawn a bye.

The draw will be conducted by New Zealand Football on Tuesday, with the next round scheduled to be played over the weekend of June 5-7.

Seventeen-year-old Petram Hassaniah scored on his senior debut to put Nomads ahead in the 16th minute, with Bays hitting back quickly with two goals in the space of three minutes. Chris Murphy put Bays back on level terms midway into the half, with a Zac Gordon shot then putting the home side ahead in the 27th minute after the ball was turned goalward by a Nomads defender. Bays captain, James Deehan, then ensured his side had some breathing room when scoring from the penalty spot with 20 to play. The two sides meet each other again in the league on Saturday in a vital game to determine the fifth spot.

A first-half hat-trick to Garbhan Coughlan saw Technical in control at the break against Parklands. Tech racked up another five goals into the second half, with Coughlan doubling his tally, with the other goals going to Jacob Richards and Yuya Taguchi.

Waimak, who are eight from eight in the New World Men's Championship, kept Coastal scoreless for almost an hour before Treye Butler broke the deadlock. Mike Rabuka then doubled the lead and Tristan Nicol, who had been subbed on early in the second half, added the final goal with six to play.

FC Twenty11 and Christchurch United were also scoreless going to the break. With 15 minutes to play captain, James McClay put the Rams in front with Oliver Collety continuing his hot form in front of goal, scoring in added time to ensure the six-time cup-holders moved into the next round.

Goals to Cameron Rean and Ryan Bellamy saw Halswell lead by two after 28 minutes against Selwyn, with the Stallions pulling a goal back just before halftime when Oliver Sim found the back of the net. There were chances at either end before Mackenzie Caughey levelled, with Halswell then paying dearly by leaving Dan Ede totally unmarked in the yard box, with eight minutes remaining, as Ede headed home the winning goal. The two sides now go head to head on Tuesday evening in the Blackwells Holden English Cup quarter-finals.

It was a tight match between Western and Burwood, with both sides having opportunities to win the game in what turned out to be a scoreless 90 minutes. Deep into the first half of added time, Jaishiv Narayan crossed the ball in, and Hugo Toye was on hand to break the deadlock.

At Guppy Park on Sunday, Mark Johnston scored midway into the opening half to put FC Nelson ahead of Rangers, with illness forcing Johnston off the field with 20 to play. Jono Masters then drew Rangers level, scoring with seven minutes of normal time to play to force the game into added time. Rangers then took the lead when Adam Rose scored in the third minute of extra time to book a place in the next round.

Big Win For Coastal SAS in Kate Sheppard Cup

Coastal Spirit SAS moved in the next round of the NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup when overrunning Universities 8-1. Cashmere Technical and Ferrymead Bays played out a tight match before Technical advanced 3-2. Blenheim Valley Sport (BVS) made it a first-up win in the national cup when overcoming Nelson Suburbs 4-2, with the bye seeing Richmond Athletic move into round 2.

Mel Cameron gave Coastal SAS an early lead with Universities keeper Carina Flannagan then producing a great save to deny Cameron minutes later. Before the break, Britney-Lee Nicholson doubled the lead and Ellena Firth scored with a long-range effort. Goals to Rebecca Lake and Lauren Dabner extended the lead. Kelsey Barrett then finished well to pull a goal back for the students. The hard-working Alyssa Whinham then scored with a well-taken goal before Cameron completed her hat-trick.

Emma Kench scored the only goal in the opening half to put Technical up at the break over Bays. Ella Fong levelled early in the second half with both sides then having chances to take the lead. Nicola Dominikovich put Tech back in front in the 76th minute, with Lara Wall extending the lead minutes later. Bryony Bunting came off the bench for Bays late in the game and, within minutes, found the back of the net, which made it a hectic ending to the game.

Tiana Williams gave BVS the ideal start to their first game in the competition when opening the scoring after just four minutes and then added a second in the 18th. Samantha Crawford reduced the margin just after an hour, with the final ten minutes seeing three goals scored. Abbey Own restored BVS's two-goal margin with Suburb's Hannah Jones, scoring with two minutes remaining before Tessa Hyland scored the last goal in the final minutes of normal time.
