The Kia Toa team of skip Dean Harper, Roger Brown and Jarrod Barker won South Canterbury’s first centre title, the men’s open triples, played at West End green on Sunday.

In the final they played in-form Tom Taiaroa, Barrie Andrews and Shayne Chisnall. The Kia Toa skip got off to a flier as the West End team held three shots and Harper came to rescue with two great draw shots to take early lead 4-0.

On the sixth end Harper was two down, but played a pearler to hold two shots. Taiaroa was close to getting kitty bowl but Harper drew another to extend the lead 9-2. The next end Barker and Brown smothered the kitty with four shots, but Andrews played a beauty to close the gap to 9-3. The next end the West End front men got into action and closed the gap with four shots to make the score 9-7.

Barker and Brown played outstanding bowls, outplaying the West End front two and scoring six shots over the next two ends with Harper adding on both occasions to extend their lead to 15-8.

The West Enders came back with three shots after Harper was a bit unlucky, knocking Andrews’ bowl in for shot and Taiaroa added two to close the gap to 16-12.

The next end, Harper’s team closed the game down and ran out the winners 16 to 14.
