Phillipstown house gutted in 'suspicious' blaze

An old villa in the inner Christchurch suburb of Phillipstown has been destroyed in a fire believed to be suspicious.

Emergency services were called to a 'well-involved' house fire in Bordesley St about 7.45am today.

Three fire crews from Christchurch Central and Woolston stations attended and worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.

There were no reports of people inside the property at the time.

The house is believed to be abandoned, but Fire and Emergency NZ said the blaze was being treated as suspicious.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire.
