Upset man attacked car then officer: police

A "ranting and raving" Dunedin man attacked a car, then an officer, police say.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said officers were called after the 34-year-old walked out into traffic to cross the road ahead of a car beginning to move away from the lights, about 1.30pm yesterday.

The man alleged he was hit by the car, so approached it and smacked the windshield, causing it to crack, Snr Sgt Bond said.

He left and was caught up with by police in Princes St "ranting and raving", and became further agitated when asked about what had happened.

As the man was being arrested for disorder, he punched an office in the side of the head, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The officer received medical treatment but was not seriously injured.

The man has been charged with aggravated assault, wilful damage, disorderly behaviour and resisting police and will appear in court this morning.
