A total of 77% were against the university changing its logo from the current coat of arms to the "O"-shaped symbol revealed on Wednesday, designed to represent the Ōtākou channel in Otago Harbour.
The proposal also includes changing the current Māori name from Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo, to Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka - a metaphor meaning A Place of Many Firsts.
Of 2479 people who took part in the poll online or by telephone before it closed yesterday evening, 571 were in favour of the change, while 1908 were against it.
The coat of arms would still be used ceremonially, the university said.
It is proposed the Māori name would be displayed more prominently in the logo when used internally, while the English name would be displayed more prominently in external use.
The university is asking staff, students and alumni for feedback on the proposal until April 16.
The Otago Daily Times poll is not scientific.
