5.1 magnitude quake in South Island

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the lower South Island last night was felt across much of the country.

The quake struck 45km north of Te Anau at a depth of about 92km at 9.56pm on Tuesday.

More than 1100 people, some as far north as Auckland, reported feeling it.

The shaking was described by GeoNet as light.
