The cause of a fire that engulfed an old hay shed in Canterbury in the early hours of Sunday morning is being investigated.
Fire crews from the Sheffield and Springfield stations were called to fight the blaze on West Coast Rd, Sheffield, about 12.56am.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said the shed fire was "well-involved" by the time crews arrived.
She said the fire was brought under control after the hay was allowed to burn.
"It is not a shed that has been used reasonably recently because there has been no new hay in the shed for at least for a couple of seasons," the spokeswoman said.
A fire investigator will at the scene on Monday morning.
