The popular tourist attraction has been plagued with paint quality issues over the past two years.
Since 2020, the donut has been repainted four times at a total cost of $17,864.57 and was repainted again in December – but this time the council believes it will last.
Selwyn District Council reserves operation manager Jonathan Crawford said the work, carried out by council-owned contractor CORDE, has a 10-year painting contractor certification.
“This will cover any defects in paint or application for 10 years,” Crawford said.
“The process involved ensuring a proper priming of the surface to ensure long-lasting results, and consisted of a low-pressure water clean and degrease, epoxy crack repairs throughout the donut, sanding and priming to put a build coat on before painting the topcoat among various other prep works/coats.”
