A cycleway between Prebbleton and the Christchurch Southern Motorway has been shelved.
The cycleway, which was to run along Springs Rd and join the existing cycle link on the Southern Motorway to Christchurch, is now too costly for Selwyn District Council to complete in the next 12 months.
The project relied on Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency funding, which required Waka Kotahi to approve the design submitted by the district council in April.
By May, Waka Kotahi had advised the initial concept design did not meet the parameters of its Urban Cycleways Programme, which focuses on accommodating users of all ages and abilities.
The district council would have to install a kerb along the cycleway to separate it from the road, increasing the estimated cost from $500,000 to $2,252,769.
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said it highlighted the challenges of the Long-Term Plan process, with projects that appeared to be locked in sometimes not making the cut.
The district council is now looking to add the cycleway to its next LTP.
