The first South Island-based Rainbow police car went on show in Rangiora over the weekend.

A special guest at the fifth Pride Picnic outing held at Victoria Park, the newly adorned police car is the first of its type to be operational in the North Canterbury region.

Its creation has been a two-year process led by Sergeant Don Munro.

‘‘It has been created to acknowledge and to celebrate diversity in the Police force and in the community and will be operational within the Prevention team here,’’ he said.

The first Rainbow cars in the Police fleet were introduced in the North Island, in 2018, which now has three in service.

‘‘They have been very well received in all the communities there,’’ said Area Commander Peter Cooper.

‘‘Proposals are now being offered up for the possibility of another two rainbow patrol cars to be located in other districts of the South Island’’.

Sergeant Munro said everywhere he has driven the brightly painted police car people have commented favourably on it.

‘‘The other day I went to a pre-school and the kids absolutely loved the rainbow colours.’’

The public may catch sight of the rainbow car on duty in North Canterbury as it will be widely used for crime prevention duties as well as being a promotional vehicle similar in purpose to the well-known Police Tractor.
