New Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon is ``very humbled'' by all the support he received, and promises to do his best for the people of the Waimakariri.

"I would like to thank all those who supported me. I want to be an accessible mayor and available to all,'' he says.

He was was inviting successful and unsuccessful candidates by phone, from the election campaign, to the Rangiora RSA for a celebratory drink later today.

But come Monday, he says, his new job starts in earnest.

Mr Gordon took a decisive victory, polling 6059 votes, 2445 ahead of his nearest rival Paul Williams, when preliminary results were released yesterday.

The voter turnout was 43.07 per cent, excluding votes in transit to the processing centre and special votes. This is higher than 2016, when the turnout was 39.37%.

Dan says his 15 year journey as a district councillors has put him in good stead to be the district's mayor.

"I have learnt a lot over that period,'' he says.

Mr Gordon says the council is faced with a lot of challenges over the next three years and he looks forward to working with colleagues to help meet them.

"We will have our time to gel. We all know what the issues are from the campaign trail, and we will start to roll up our sleeves from Monday and get to work on them,'' he says.

Among issues facing the district were growth, rising rates bills and traffic congestion.

"Congratulations to all who stood. This election has been well contested,'' he says.

However, he is sad for those who were unsuccessful, among them former deputy Mayor Kevin Felstead who has served many years on council.
