Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue crewman Tom Hyland said the man was airlifted near Lake Sumner, 100km north-west of Christchurch, on Wednesday after a cardiac arrest.
He was transported to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition about 5pm on Wednesday.
