Second fatality in a month at a Canterbury ice skating rink

A person has died after an incident at an ice skating rink in Canterbury on Friday.

St Johns attended an accident in Staveley at 4pm Friday afternoon, and took one person in a critical condition to Christchurch Hospital via helicopter.

Police confirmed a person has died at Christchurch Hospital this morning.

Staveley Hall Society, which runs the Staveley Ice Skating rink, said the incident happened during a private curling session.

"Due to respecting the family's request for privacy at this time we will have no further comment," it said.

Police said the death will be referred to the Coroner.

It is the second ice fatality in Canterbury in a few weeks.

A 13-year-old girl who fell and hit her head while ice-skating on a school outing died on 30 July.

Kymani Hiley-Hetaraka suffered an unsurvivable head injury after falling at Alpine Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch.

She was taken to hospital in a critical condition following the fall.
