Beryl, who has a medical condition, went missing from the Bishopdale area late on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement about 10.30pm, police said she was found by a member of the public who had received an emergency text alert sent out to advise locals in the area.
Senior Sergeant Adam Chambers said police responded immediately and a search was initiated in Bishopdale and the surrounding areas.
"Due to concerns for the woman’s welfare and forecast bad weather conditions, police issued an emergency mobile alert (EMA).
"EMAs are public warning messages sent to all enabled cellphones within a specified area.
"EMAs are used sparingly, when there is immediate concern for a person's life or safety.
"In this instance, a member of the public located the missing woman around 10pm and notified police, who safely transported her home.
"Police would like to thank the members of the public who responded to the alert, checked their properties and actively searched for the missing woman."
The woman’s daughter-in-law told chrislynchmedia.com she was found by a member of the public walking along Main South Road.
“We had so much of the Bishopdale community and surrounding area looking for her.
“Thank you for your media presence with this incident.
“We are a very lucky family and aware the outcome could have been very different.”
