Almost half of the city’s residents will be put under water restrictions in the new year.

City council head of three waters and waste Helen Beaumont said it anticipates introducing level one water restrictions for at least three to four weeks during January to the city’s central water zone, which accounts for 42 per cent of Christchurch residents.

It includes Hoon Hay, Hilmorton, Spreydon, Cashmere, Beckenham, Somerfield, Saint Martins, Opawa, Waltham, Sydenham, Phillipstown, Linwood, Richmond, Edgeware, Shirley, Dallington, St Albans, Merivale, Mairehau and Papanui.

She said there is a possibility the restriction period could extend into February.

Level one restrictions mean hoses, sprinklers and garden irrigation systems are permitted on alternate days.

This means if a person lives at an odd-numbered address, they can water their garden on odd dates, and a person living at an even-numbered address can water their garden on even dates.

City council staff have recommended the restrictions to support ongoing work on the water supply network and to allow the drilling of the new well in Papanui and repairs to a Cashmere reservoir.
