Teens arrested for alleged aggravated robbery

Three people, including two youths, have been arrested in relation to an alleged aggravated robbery in Christchurch.

The teenagers, aged 15, 17 and 19-years-old,  are facing charges for the aggravated robbery of Riccarton Liquorland on August 12 and unlawfully taking a vehicle.

They were remanded in custody after appearing in the district court and Youth Court on Thursday.

A fourth offender is yet to be caught.

The group allegedly stormed the store, leaving with cash and cigarettes. One person was armed with a hammer.

Store owner Steve Crotty said he was pleased the offenders were now off the street.

"It doesn't mean they have all been caught but that's three off the streets. It's getting the message out there that they will get caught and that they should think twice about their actions."

It comes after The Star reported last month that an organised group of youths were allegedly committing a series of robberies around the city.

There have been at least 10 robberies around Christchurch since the start of August.

The group is believed to be carrying out 'initiation' type activities.

Senior Sergeant Nicola Reeves said it is not clear yet whether the offenders arrested on Thursday are linked to the group but the investigation remains ongoing.

The 15-year-old and 17-year-old will reappear in the Youth Court on Tuesday for a bail hearing and the 19-year-old will reappear on September 23 for a bail hearing.
