Students work to 'eradicate racism' at speech awards heat

The preliminary heat of the North Canterbury Race Unity Speech Awards has been held in Christchurch.

The annual challenge for local secondary school pupils had a theme of “Nurturing the Young” as a way to combat racism.

The special event has been running since 2001 when it was started as a partnership between the New Zealand Baha’i community, police and Human Rights Commission.

The education of youth is considered one of the best ways to counter the negative effects of racism in New Zealand, and the awards night theme gave rise to some animated presentations.

Head judge Lisa Heald said she was impressed with the performances of the contestants.

“The content, that these young people have researched and put together so that we can understand what's important to eradicate racism in our country, is amazing,” she said.

Sophie Frost, from Middleton Grange school, was the winner on the night. She will now go on to participate in the semi-finals in Auckland later this year.

“Yes, it's very exciting. I’ll try and do well. Represent North Canterbury in big Auckland, but we’ll see how it goes,” Sophie said.
