Police are investigating another suspicious vehicle fire in Christchurch on Wednesday night.

Crews from the Harewood and Wigram fire stations attended the suspicious fire at Avonhead Cemetery about 8.15pm. No one was injured.

It comes after concerns were raised on Wednesday over people and property being put at risk from stolen vehicles which have been dumped then set alight in Canterbury.

Carol Garland, whose property backs on to the Waimakariri River, is worried a major fire could be caused by one of the many vehicles being dumped then set on fire in the area. Her concerns were backed by Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Said fire risk management officer Kerri Pring: "There is absolutely a fire risk and they are a risk to people."

Just last week, firefighters in Christchurch were called on to put out four suspicious vehicle fires in two days.

A total fire ban across Canterbury came into effect on Friday. It means no fires are permitted unless it is an approved fire type for cooking purposes. The fire risk in many parts of Canterbury remains very high.
