The Christchurch City Council said there had been a loss of pressure in the water mains that supplied the area. A spokesperson said up to 300 properties were without water on Wednesday afternoon while contractors worked to restore the supply.
In an update on Friday, council three waters and waste reticulation manager Tim Drennan says residents in the affected area should continue to boil all water used for drinking, food preparation, utensil washing, brushing teeth or making ice until the council advises it is safe to use.
The boil water notice would remain in place until it is confident there was no contamination.
He said the notice was a precaution as the water supply relied on a constant pressure to prevent contaminants entering pipes.
