The alleged assault of a first-year Canterbury University student who was punched and verbally abused for wearing a pink sweatshirt that was called “gay” has been passed onto police.

The student was left concussed and bruised after being punched on Thursday night outside a Canterbury University event in the USCA car park on Ilam Rd.

A university spokeswoman said the student association has completed its initial investigation and the student, with the support of UC security footage, has provided details to police for further investigation.

“We can confirm that when the incident took place UC Security offered support and treatment. The matter is now with the police.

“We support institutions, policies and practices that protect and promote individuals on the basis of who they are and what they do, not on the basis of the colour of their skin, their sexuality or religious beliefs.

"Everyone has the right to feel safe and that they belong at UC,” she said.

A police spokeswoman said the incident was reported to police on Saturday and the matter was filed as there were no lines of enquiry.

However, the police spokeswoman was unable to confirm when the security camera footage was handed to police and whether the file on the incident has been updated with the footage.

The student posted about the incident to the students' association Facebook page, UCSA noticeboard.

The alleged assault took place at Mono, a weekly event run at the university's student bar, The Foundry.

The student described the offender as about 1.6m with jeans, a white tee shirt with a denim overshirt.
