A fizzy drink can found in the letterbox of a Christchurch household on Tuesday prompted an effervescent response from police.

When a Halswell resident checked their letterbox yesterday morning, they found the spray-painted can with a note next to it reading "pp juice, open for some fun".

Police were then called to the address on Brenda Pl about 8.40am after the resident thought the surprise in their mailbox may have been something more sinister.

Police are investigating but at this stage the it appears to have been a prank.

"Police are making enquiries into the incident, however, at this stage there is no information to suggest it was anything more than a soft drink can."
