A biennial meeting about the future of Sumner will be directed by residents more than in previous years.
Big issues affecting Sumner will be the focus of a community meeting next week.

The meeting which is held every two years and organised by the Sumner Community Residents’ Association, will be held in the Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre on Tuesday from 6.30pm.

Presentations will be made by key speakers from the police, city council staff, the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade, Land Information NZ and SCRA on a range of different topics.

Some topics which will be discussed include Sumner’s crime cameras, the Bays Area Skate Project, summer fire hazards, where to go in an emergency, how SCRA can get more involved with the community, and more.

Residents can email any questions they would like to have answered by the speakers during these presentations to SCRA in the lead up to the event.

There will be an opportunity to ask any additional questions of the speakers face to face after the presentations.

SCRA spokeswoman Liza Sparrow said Tuesday’s meeting will be different to those held in previous years, which have focused on specific and obvious issues.

“Previously, we’ve directed the conversation. Now the main thing is making a space available for residents to connect face to face with the agencies which are serving the communities and allowing people to ask questions of them,” she said.

“What we’re trying to do is reverse it and bring the issues to us.”

She said the group will use the feedback to consider how it can respond to the needs of Sumner residents and the wider bays area.
