Small measures will aim to reduce congestion around Shirley Boys' and Avonside Girls' High School.

The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has approved 63 measures including introducing stopping and parking restrictions in busy areas including parts of Travis Rd, Blue Gum Pl, Wattle Drive and Willryan Ave.

Pegasus Post reported in June residents were fed up with students at Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ High School parking and driving badly in streets around the school.

Residents said they had experienced students parking badly and sometimes driving down narrow roads too fast.

Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone said the parking restrictions are necessary given the school is in the busy Queen Elizabeth II Park is, with the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and Taiora: QEII Recreation Sport Centre on site.

"If people can't get on-site parking at those three places, then you've got pressure on the surrounding streets."

He said the effectiveness measures approved will be analysed and could be increased if parking issues continue.

Reducing congestion around the has been a priority for the schools recently. In July, three new bus stops were approved Bridge St, Breezes Rd and Avondale Rd to reduce the number of students and parents driving to school.
