A Christchurch cemetery has been renamed to recognise its wider significance as the home of unidentified victims of the February 22, 2011, earthquake.

The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board agreed to rename Avonhead Park Cemetery to Avonhead Memorial Cemetery.

The cemetery was approved as the interment site for the remains of unidentified victims from the quake.

The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery group has previously called on the name of the cemetery to be changed to Avonhead Memorial Cemetery in recognition of its wider significance as the home of the unidentified quake victims.

A total of 37 earthquake victims and families of victims have used the site as a place of burial, which represents a small number of the 5000 plots the cemetery is home to.

Christchurch City Council staff recommended against changing the name of the cemetery, stating the potential distress or offence that could result from a change of name could potentially outweigh the positive feelings of those in favour of a name change.
