Men appear in court over Mongrel Mob stabbing

Two men have been remanded in custody in relation to the stabbing of a Mongrel Mob gang member.

Ngaoa Kokaua, 48, died after an altercation at a house on Wainui St, Riccarton about 8.45pm on Saturday. He fled the address in a vehicle and was found about 9.30pm on Clarence St. He died a short time later.

A 31-year-old man, who has been charged with murder, was remanded in custody until his High Court appearance on October 4, while a 38-year-old has been remanded in custody for a bail hearing on Tuesday morning. He is charged with assault, using a wooden stick as a weapon.

Both men appeared via audio visual link and their names have been suppressed. 

There was a heavy police presence at the Christchurch District Court on Monday morning. The main courtroom was closed to the public with police officers outside. 

Kokaua, a father of 11, moved to Christchurch from Hastings after the earthquakes to work in construction.

A police spokesperson said investigators were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Investigators would conduct scene examinations over the coming days.
