Police are investigating after they received a call from the hospital about 5.15am on Thursday morning, saying a person had been admitted and treated for the wound.
A police spokeswoman said the injury "is not thought to be serious".
"Police are making enquiries following reports that a person has gone to Christchurch Hospital this morning to seek treatment for a suspected firearms-related injury," a police spokeswoman said.
"Further updates will be provided when available," she said.
Stuff has reported it is understood the man was shot in the torso with a shotgun and was dropped off at the hospital by an associate.
