Li Zhang Tan, 25, was living in a small township south of Christchurch when the offending happened.
On about 12 occasions, Tan allegedly set up his cellphone in a pile of clothes on the bathroom floor after he had showered in order to film the woman showering.
The woman eventually discovered the camera, leading police to charge Tan with three charges of intentionally making an intimate visual recording of another person.
He appeared in the Christchurch District Court earlier this month and is expected to appear again on March 5.
