“I was looking for a dog. I’m big on responsible breeding and rescuing so I had my heart set on a rescue dog – I thought I better check out the animal shelter,” she said.
“He’s so calm and knows who he is which is just such a sweetheart, the sweetest boy, I knew he was the one instantly.”
Ninety-five dogs were adopted or rehomed by Christchurch City Council's animal services team in 2024, many of them older dogs.
But while Dozer may be mature, Lowe said he certainly doesn’t act like a 9-year-old.
“He’s really helped me getting out and doing more things, going for walks, going to the dog park and meeting new people. doing things like that makes you feel better about yourself.”
Dozer needed a bit of dental work done but Lowe said the animal shelter team were open about that from the beginning.
“The team really helped out with that, so it was more manageable financially,” she said.
“I absolutely would encourage anyone looking for a dog to have a look at adopting a rescue, it’s so cool to be able to give a dog at home.”
Christchurch City Council animal services manager Lionel Bridger said the team works hard to make sure the dogs end up in loving new homes.
“When you adopt a dog from the Animal Shelter, you can always be assured they are in good health, vaccinated and the costs are minimal. We want the best outcome for everyone involved and will go over and above.”
