Extra fire crews were called in after a house fire in Hillsborough on Tuesday afternoon.
Fire and Emergency spokesman Darryl Ball said on arrival, the fire at Aynsley Tce, was thought not to be "overly bad".
But after investigation, it was revealed the fire had progressed further than first thought and extra crews were called in, he said.
No one was home at the time the fire broke out, he said.
A fire investigator has been called to the scene.
Fire crews from Central, Spreydon and Opawa attended.
