A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said crews from the Redwood and the central city stations were called out to the fire in some mulch on Gardiners Rd at 7.24am on Friday.
Firefighters were at the scene until 9am, dampening down the blaze.
The spokesman said the fire was not close to any properties and the cause has not been determined.
However, he said it is not being treated as suspicious.
