A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said three fire crews attended the blaze at a property on Waratah St, Avondale, about 4.40am on Wednesday.
The fire started in the ceiling and took about an hour to extinguish.
No one was injured and the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.
