A property owner and firefighters battled a large bonfire in the outskirts of Christchurch this morning.

Firefighters and police were at the scene of the blaze at the property on Marshland Rd, near Lower Styx Rd.

They were called to the fire about 11.20am on Tuesday. The owner of the property helped to bring the blaze under control before it spread.

Photos show the fire close to trees, but a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said it did not spread to them and has now been brought under control.

Said the spokesman: "It's up to the owner to make sure it is extinguished by nightfall."
