Fatal motorcycle crash

A motorcyclist has died after going off the road and crashing into a tree.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of West Coast and Sandy Knoll roads, in West Melton, about 11.55pm on Thursday. 

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to take the man, in his 50s, to Christchurch Hospital. But on arrival the the driver had died.  

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Andrew Norris said crews from the Kirwee and Rolleston stations provided first aid and traffic control until police, two ambulances and a helicopter arrived.

It is the second fatal crash in Canterbury within a week. 

Warren Victor Galbraith, 68,  died in Christchurch Hospital on Monday evening after he crashed his motorcycle in Rakaia at the weekend.
