EVs, AI and augmented reality feature at tech expo

About 10,000 tech enthusiasts got a glimpse of the future at the Smart Christchurch Innovation Expo.

Smart Christchurch City Initiatives lead and expo organiser Grace de Leon said the event at the Te Pae Convention Centre keeps getting bigger each year.

"We have Hyundai and Tesla electric cars, and we have a range of augmented reality exhibitions as well."

Around 50 companies and organisations showcased their products, ideas and solutions at the free event on Friday and Saturday.

It featured a range of interactive exhibits, keynote speakers and cutting-edge technology.

De Leon said artificial intelligence was a key feature in many of the inventions this year.

"For our exhibitors, (AI) is very important.

"I mean, AI has been with us for a very long time, but now it has become more mainstream."

Ethan Te Puni, the co-founder of new start-up business Oasis Aero, was aiming to get his aerial monitoring, zero-emission, miniature airships off the ground.

"We're really trying to fit in between the price point of helicopters and the range of drones," Te Puni said.

"Because drones can go 10, 20, 30 kilometres if you're lucky, and we're looking to go hundreds of kilometres. Helicopters are very expensive."

He believes miniature airships have a big advantage over other aircraft and the expo was a great way to generate interest in them.

"We've got some really good connections so far from everyone from tax lawyers to a lot of engineers have been coming up to us. It's been really good."

Organisers hope the large-scale event will lead to more innovation and inspire the next generation of inventors in Christchurch.
