An investigation is under way to find out how diesel got into the water near a Banks Peninsula wharf.

Environment Canterbury said it is aware of "small and intermittent amounts of diesel" rising up from the shoreline on the south side of the wharf in Akaroa Harbour.

Oil spill responders are at the site investigating the source of the diesel and assessing the situation.

ECan regional on-scene commander for oil spill response Richard Purdon said: “We are aware of the issue and are currently investigating the source and cause of the diesel.

"The leak appears very small and intermittent, but the sooner we can isolate the source, the sooner we can stop it.

"For the moment, harbour activities can continue as normal.

"As soon as we know more, we will update the community and all relevant organisations," Mr Purdon said.
