Christchurch City Mission’s famous Christmas Day lunch is on again this year and the organisation says it can’t wait to celebrate with volunteers and the community.

It will be making sure isolated people, hard-hit families, and people who can’t afford to celebrate Christmas will be able to enjoy a special meal, and that their children will get presents from Father Christmas.

The City Mission Christmas Lunch is the biggest public kindness event in Christchurch on Christmas Day.

Hundreds of individual and business supporters help serve meals to more than 1000 people.

One very special aspect of the event is how 350 volunteers give up part of their own Christmas Day to help put on the Christmas Day lunch. It would be impossible to do it without them, says Christchurch City Mission.

This year the lunch will be held at the Linwood Rugby Club, 56 Kearneys Rd, Bromley, Christchurch. The venue was changed from the usual school site because of renovations and the Linwood Rugby Club kindly offered its facilities.

Christchurch City Mission also has a new principle sponsor this year – ASB Bank.

Covid-19 precautions are another new thing this year. Five volunteers will be onsite to collect contact tracing information using QR codes and guests also have the option of signing in.

The Christmas lunch will be held in Christchurch’s largest marquee, and needs 100kg potato salad, 100kg coleslaw, 50kg green salad, 100kg berries, 40-litres of cream, 100 pavlovas, 60kg Christmas cake, 400kg ham on the bone, 2000 sausages, and 1000 bread rolls.

Yes, it’s the biggest lunch in Christchurch and it is served with community love.
