A house fire in North New Brighton is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The Britannia St home was significantly damaged in a blaze that happened at about 8pm on Wednesday.

Initially, the fire was "deemed suspicious" but fire investigator Bruce Irvine said it was most likely caused by a fault to do with an entertainment system.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

"The occupant had done absolutely everything they could, including electrical testing of his equipment.

"He was really on to it and used quality multi-boards. Sometimes we just have accidental fires and this is one of these occasions."

"Unfortunately, due to the open nature of the property, there was very little able to be saved," he said.
