Canterbury University will grant staff leave to attend a strike against climate change, while students will not have to explain their absence in classes.

Young people across the country will take to the streets and away from their desks as part of a nationwide strike, School Strike 4 Climate NZ, on September 27.

It comes after Lincoln University announced its support for the strike on Monday.

Canterbury University Vice-Chancellor Cheryl de la Rey said staff will be able to take leave to attend the event, while students will not have to explain their absence in classes.

“Our staff have signalled the importance of addressing climate change in recent feedback for the new UC Strategy, and we are responding to their concerns as we shape the future direction of UC’s operations, and facilitate more teaching and research that makes a difference in the world."

This will be the third event where school students have protested after demonstrations in March and May.

The Christchurch event will be held in Cathedral Square, 1pm.
