Barber said the board was “stoked” to see city council staff acting on the issue, with the roundabout likely to be installed this month or next.
“For a long time there’s been complaints in Avondale about cars going too fast. It’s been a bit of a pain in people’s lives with people speeding through that area, and they’ve also had a lot of hassle with people doing burnouts,” Barber said.
Barber said the area was part of the city council’s Slow Speed Neighbourhoods programme, but the board wanted this to be the first step in looking at traffic calming, as more needed to be done.
“Putting up a sign saying 40km an hour doesn’t slow people down, you know it’s things like judder bars and that sort of stuff that actually makes a difference.
I was really surprised that they got stuck into it so quickly, so they must’ve really heard us,” Barber said.
Consultation on the Slow Speeds Neighbourhood programme for Avondale was open from November to December last year, and the city council received 62 submissions from individuals and groups.

"There are always tyre marks (from donuts and other dangerous skids) on this stretch of road, as well as concerns for the noise it creates."
Another said: “The corner of Orrick Cres and Cowes St is a very bad corner for doughnuts.
"On average there are about two a week. As well as being very loud (often it sounds like the car is about to crash into the house), they can be dangerous.
"On at least one occasion the car has crashed into the lamp post and the driver had to be taken off in an ambulance."
Barber said the roundabout would act as a trial and if successful the city council might look at expanding its use.
