The chase started on Cobham St in Spreydon about 3.20am after the driver of the vehicle failed to stop when signalled to pull over, a police spokeswoman said.
The pursuit ended on Barrington St near Coronation St when police abandoned the chase.
The high number of police pursuits in Christchurch is a key reason for the introduction of the Eagle police helicopter, which started circling the city yesterday as part of a five-week trial.
The police spokeswoman said the Eagle chopper was not involved in the incident.
