Jenny Powell, "Dunedin Unesco City of Literature South D Poet Lorikeet", joined Bathgate Park School Year 0-1 pupils and their teacher Rachael Lawless recently, to write a poem about a teddy.

When Ms Powell introduced her threadbare teddy to the group at Bathgate Park School, one girl rushed away and found another bear in the classroom. The poet was not fazed, saying: "Teddy usually goes around by himself. But let’s write a poem about Teddy having a friend."

After a discussion, the 5- and 6-year-olds started with: "Teddy feels happy. He is with a friend."

The suggested sounds the bears made included purrs and kisses, as well as growls, and activities included catching honey and fish.

"You have written a fantastic poem," Ms Powell told the pupils.

The workshop programme is a partnership between Unesco and Read, Share, Grow, the library campaign in South Dunedin.

Ms Powell designed the workshop to consolidate early reading experiences.

Green Island, Carisbrook and Broad Bay schools are also taking part. Co-ordinator Debbie Lancaster Gordon said a collection of the poems would be sent to participating schools and also go to Unesco Cities of Literature around the world.
