Trees for Families is back for 2023 and at a new location, Rotary Park, as the Harbourside site is now at capacity.

The project is a joint venture between Rotary Dunedin and Keep Dunedin Beautiful (KDB). Since 2012, it has been responsible for planting 1000 trees, supplied by Blueskin Nurseries.

KDB is inviting people to join the Father’s Day event in the lower part of Rotary Park on Sunday, September 3, at 11am.

Native trees and shrubs are provided and cost $20 each. Supplies are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

A KDB spokesman said planting gave the opportunity to mark a family milestone, while contributing to important biodiversity and revegetation projects.

People celebrating a birth, commemorating a passed loved one, marking a birthday or simply wanting to connect to the land were welcome to attend and plant a tree.

Checking the Rotary Park site on Tuesday were Rotary Dunedin president Katie Slaughter, KDB president Cr Mandy Mayhem and former Rotary Dunedin president Gordon Tucker.

"Gordon has done a most incredible amount of work in the planning and preparation," Ms Slaughter said.

Access was steep from the main entrance in Highcliff Rd to the lower part of Rotary Park, so the plan was to change the angle of the pathway, Mr Tucker said.

He was confident that Trees for Families could plant in Rotary Park for 20 years.

The planting site can be approached by a short walk from Harbour Heights (off Connell St) or the path up from beside 36 Connell St. Signs will guide the public.

The approach from the main carpark is longer and steeper.
