After eight and a-half years at Knox Presbyterian Church, the Rev Dr Kerry Enright has retired.

At his final service on Sunday, Dr Enright said “my journey in ministry has been rich and diverse’’.

Ordained in 1983 after studying in Dunedin, the former lawyer completed his D. Min. at Princeton Theological Seminary in the United States, then served in parishes in Whanganui and Ashburton before taking up the prestigious post as the Presbyterian Church’s Assembly Executive Secretary in 1996.

He became national director of the Uniting Church of Australia’s aid and development arm, UnitingWorld, in 2007, travelling extensively in Asia, Africa and the Pacific.

Dr Enright’s successor, Dr Sureka Goringe, described the organisation as “stronger for Kerry’s work”.

Dr Enright and his “incredible” wife Dr Mavis Duncanson returned to Dunedin in 2014 when he took up the Knox Church post.

Retired minister and Knox parish member Peter Wishart spoke of Dr Enright’s high standards of preaching and “reverent devotion” to the wider church.

On behalf of the parish, gifts of pounamu were presented to Dr Enright and Dr Duncanson by Jody Takimoana.

To remind them of Knox, a mounted piece of Port Chalmers bluestone was presented, as the church is made of the stone.

Members of the Evergreen Korean Church, which uses Knox halls, presented flowers and a cake.

An informal lunch followed the service.
