The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra will launch its International Series next weekend with a concert featuring music by the great classical composers Beethoven, Brahms and Strauss.

The concert will be held next Saturday, April 20, from 7.30pm at Dunedin Town Hall.

The programme, featuring Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture, Richard Strauss’ French Horn Concerto No. 1, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and Hungarian Dance No. 1, will be conducted by Matthias Bamert with French horn soloist Samuel Jacobs.

A conductor of international acclaim, Bamert will be performing in his first concert with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will feature three of Germany’s greatest composers, starting with Beethoven and his dramatic and joyous Prometheus Overture.

Brahms’ Third Symphony is said to be his most lyrical and best-crafted symphony — it’s also the shortest. The work remains famous to this day, with its third movement often used in television and films.

Because his father was a French horn player, Richard Strauss became a great champion of the instrument, and his first Horn Concerto remains a staple of the modern horn repertoire.

All the technical skills of soloist, NZSO Principal Horn Samuel Jacobs, will be showcased in what is considered one of the most technically demanding of all French horn concertos.

A free pre-concert talk will be given by Emeritus Professor Peter Adams on April 20, from 6.40pm-7pm, at the Dunedin Town Hall complex.
